Found practically throughout the country, especially in dry low land areas, in open savannas or those with scattered trees, dry, deciduous forests, cattle ranches. Normally feeds on the ground, where it looks for invertebrates, reptiles, small mammals, carrion and road kill. Also digs up the nests of reptiles, especially tortoises, to eat the eggs. Known to predate nests of ground-nesting birds such as the southern lapwing. Extremely sociable with groups of up to 20 individuals. The picture taken in the state of Guárico shows a dominant male lording it over other males during the normal aggression while feeding on carrion.
