An excellent value at under $20, You Can Be A Woman Engineer is a 'must have' for parents with young daughters."Your daughter, the engineer! If you like the sound of that, you'll love this CD-ROM. You Can Be A Woman EngineerReviewed by Tina VelgosYou've heard that girls are made of sugar and spice. Some girls play with Barbies. Some girls don't -- never have, never will. Enter "You Can Be A Woman Engineer", an innovative CD-ROM which guides elementary-age girls in the right direction. That is, towards math and sciences. Although these areas are still heavily male-dominated, the future holds some interesting possibilities. Meet Judith Love Cohen, who shares her story (in English and Spanish versions) with girls about what it's like to be a woman engineer and lead the team who launched the Hubble Space Telescope. Awesome photos and video from NASA and wonderfully vivid graphics makes this software highly informative and interesting. Whether it's an animated cow jumping over the moon, actual Apollo footage or a lunar landing, there are plenty of "hot spots" to explore. By using a split screen, the text of the story appears on the left side of the screen while the graphics and animation are on the right side, just a mouse click away. The video and entire program ran smoothly on a Macintosh Performa. Although the words aren't highlighted as they are read, the software comes with a paperback book by the same name -- a wonderful bonus since the CD-ROM costs less than $20. It's nice for kids and parents to read the book after playing the CD-ROM. If your child has a question about Saturn, for instance, use this as an opportunity to spend some time with her and research Saturn by using a multimedia reference encyclopedia or the Internet for more information. I truly believe that knowledge is power and the future of technology is upon us. While the narration is serious and dry, the animation and graphics (done by David Katz) scream FUN! There are crossword style puzzles for kids to play where they can double click a puzzle number, listen to a clue, click the matching icon and drag it to the puzzle where the words instantly appear in the puzzle. Some of the icons were difficult to figure out for kids, especially the school icon which showed two girls for the word school instead of a school house. It also took awhile for kids to figure that the numbers need to be double-clicked and not just clicked once. In the Conversations with the Author section, girls listen to Ms. Cohen share her personal, space, writing, school and engineering experiences. There are five questions in each section, each question is asked by a girl and answered by Ms. Cohen in language that is easy to understand for elementary-aged children. Adventures in Space has two sections. The first part takes girls on an in-depth tour of the Solar System with spectacular photography, thanks to technology such as the Hubble Space Telescope. Part two explains galaxies, stars and nebula. There's also a small section of 16 basic vocabulary words for young learners and three lessons aimed at teachers and parents for activities for girls away from the computer. Girls can grab the lyrics of an original theme song "You Can Be A Woman Engineer" and print them for their teachers. Although I'd rather have my daughter singing this song and being motivated that she can be anything she wants to be, the repetitive lyrics are hard to forget once you hear it. Before long, you'll be humming this tune! "You Can Be A Woman Engineer" is a great confidence builder and a "must have" for parents with young daughters.
