The Official Linux Slackware(R) 96 is the perfect choice for a low-cost, high performance 32-bit multiuser operating system. Developed by Linus Torvalds and hundreds of volunteer programmers on the Internet, Linux is a clone of the UNIX(R) operating system.

Patrick Volkerding created the Slackware distribution of Linux and authored this CDROM set. Linux Slackware 96 turns your machine into a multitasking workstation with a full range of software development, text editing, and image processing tools. What's more, you'll be able to connect your machine to the Internet and use electronic mail or news.

This package includes everything you need to install and run Slackware Linux 96.

You get complete source code and compilers. The first CDROM contains the easy-to-install Linux system (kernel 2.0.0), source code, and a live Linux file system. The other CDROMs contain Linux programs and documentation from popular Linux ftp sites around the Internet, such as sunsite.unc.edu, and tsx-11.mit.edu.

Official Slackware Linux 96 requires 4 MB of memory (8 is recommended) and at least 12 MB of hard disk space to run in a CDROM dependant mode. You don't need to repartition your hard disk; you can install Slackware on a DOS partition! Depending on what you install, Linux can use anywhere from 40 to 300 MB. A minimal hard drive installation with C and C++ development tools, networking, electronic mail and news, the XFree86 X Window System (version 3.1.2), and several applications requires around 80 MB.

A more full installation includes the NTeX TeX distribution, GNU C/C++/Objective-C/Fortran-77 (v. 2.7.2), Tcl (v. 7.5), Tk (v. 4.1), TclX (v. 7.5.0), GNU and BSD versions of the make utility, byacc and GNU bison, flex, the 5.3.12 C libraries, gdb, SVGAlib, GNU Common LISP (v. 2.2), p2c (Pascal to C), m4, perl (v. 5.002), rcs, emacs (v. 19.31), TCP/IP networking, UUCP, SLIP/PPP, BSD sendmail (v. 8.7.5), cnews, nn, tin, trn, inn, fvwm95-2, xlockmore-3.9, xf86config, which builds your X configuration files from simple prompts, the TkDesk file manager, ghostscript, xfilemanager, xv 3.10, GNU chess, xfm 1.3.2, gnuplot, xfractint, X games, xview3.2-X11R6p2, the Apache HTTP server, and the Arena and Lynx Web browsers.

Linux Slackware 96 is compatible with most 386SX or better PC hardware. The advanced features of the Linux 2.0.0 kernel will provide stellar performance on high-end systems, including support for symmetric multi- processing (up to 16 processors), PCI, and special code optimizations for the 486, Pentium, and Pentium Pro.
