Feature: Walking Tours
Benefit: This section includes virtual reality walkthroughs of three of Wrights most famous buildings: the Robie House, the Ennis-Brown House, and the Larkin Building, which was destroyed in 1950. Users navigate three dimensional simulations of each of the structures that are fully furnished and authentically detailed. Their movements are plotted on a corresponding floor plan and elevation, so that users always know where they are in any given structure.

Feature: Wright Works
Benefit: This section consists of a database of more than 360 of Wrights most important works, including both architecture and decorative arts. Each work is accompanied by an image and test. Users can access the structures both chronologically and geographically.

Personal Stuff:

• Wright was born at the end of the civil war and lived to see the space age (died at 92) . Created 484 buildings, (75 have been destroyed.)
• The last 16 of Wright's 72 years as an architect, he created nearly 1/2 his total output.
• Wright first saw electric lights when he went to Chicago at age 20 after taking some engineering courses
• Wright had 3 wives. His first wife had 6 children with him. He left her after 20 years of marriage.
• Two of Wright's sons became architects and one grandson. His grandson was an apprentice at Taliesin (Wright's studio complex).

Buildings And Furniture:

• High slatted dining room chairs, a Wright signature piece, are meant to create a screen around the family enclave, protecting the family unit within.
• Created windows to be "bands of light", not holes cut into walls
• One reason the eaves of his Prairie Home roofs hang over so far is to protect windows that swung out - a new design since windows of the time opened into the house or just slid up/down.
• Often built lots of furniture into the walls (book shelves, couches, dressers) to prevent clients from moving in with their own furniture and ruin the look!
• Wright was the first to create steel office furniture (chairs and desks) and plate glass doors, in his famous Larkin Office bldg.

Where He Worked:

• First 20 years of his career spent in Oak Park Ill at his Home/studio - now fully restored and houses a museum and the "Home and Studio Foundation"
• Taliesin" pronounced Tal-ee-essen is the name of Wright's later home /studio complex in Arizona. He had a fellowship/apprentices there who were his draftsmen, worked on his farm, etc. - some accused him of slave labor! Taliesen is Welsh for "shining brow"
• Murder! in 1914 while Wright was out of town, a servant killed 7 people at Taliesen and burnt the whole place down.

Philosophy:

Created ORGANIC architecture:

• Appropriate to time: used materials and technology that was available, didn't copy older styles like classical Greek b/c those styles addressed the family and social patterns of that time only.
• Appropriate to place: harmony with natural environment ex: prarie home extend mostly out over horizontal lines as the landscape does
• Appropriate to man: mission of a bldg. is "to serve man". The space is more important than the surrounding walls and ceiling, hence the open floor plans he created.
